Inspiration from food?

Have any of you guys ever just had an affinity for a specific cuisine? I love all kinds of food, but thai food really opened up my mind to Asian culture. Been learning a lot about the history  of Japan, China, Laos, and Thailand. All this research because of some noodles and peanut seasoning.

Has anyone else ever been influenced about a culture or way of life from food?

  8. I got a thing for fruit like strawberries, peaches, apples, and bananas. I don't normally get inspired by food but I like what I find tastes good. I had some sweet and sour chicken. It was great and was one of those cheap microwave meals so I'm guessing legit s&sc tastes even better. Pocky was, eh, okay. I don't see what the big deal about it is except for it is Japanese and Japanese stuff is desu desu kawaii or something.

  16. This... is fairly foreign of a concept to me. I haven't been inspired to learn a country's history based on their cuisine.
However, you sound like you'd really like Anthony Bourdain's show No Reservations.

  18. I've always meant to look in on other cultures and their food, but have never really strayed away from my basic Canadian diet. Any good suggestions on a good cuisine type to start?
